Grant Place Remodel
As-Builts to Schematic Design

Coburn Design Build
This single family remodel is located in Boulder, Colorado, near the beloved Chautauqua Park neighborhood. The home carries the charm and character of its historic roots, and the client came to the project with a clear goal in mind: to create more space for his growing family while honoring and preserving what makes the home special.
I have been involved from the very beginning of the design process, starting with as-built documentation of the existing conditions through schematic design.
The image below shows the existing house.

My contributions to the project centered on helping the team develop and present multiple design options for the client. I put together plan drawings, exterior elevations, and 3D exterior views to communicate each option clearly.

One of the defining challenges of this project is the City of Boulder shadow restriction requirements, which limit how much a structure can shade neighboring properties. Given the site conditions, staying within those restrictions required creative thinking around the roof lines and overall layout of the addition. Our team worked through many iterations, carefully studying how the massing could grow the home in a way that satisfied the family's needs while still staying within the city's restrictions. To help visualize this constraint, our team modeled the solar shadow restriction plane in 3D, which became an important tool for both internal design exploration and client communication.

The 3D views incorporating the modeled shadow restriction plane were particularly useful in helping the client understand not just what the design looked like, but why certain decisions were being made.
I also helped produce more detailed renderings showing different siding material options, giving the client a tangible sense of how each choice would affect the overall character and appearance of the home.
